November 03rd, 2017, Friday- the flight from Düsseldorf, Germany

Today we started our student exchange to the United States. We will stay there for twelve days, do field trips and visit the Walker School in Marietta.

Our trip started at 6:30 MEZ in Bornheim. We went to the airport in Düsseldorf with our parents.

When we arrived at the airport we went to our meeting point and checked in.  At 11:00 MEZ our boarding started and we went on board of the airplane.             After our start at 11:35 MEZ, we arrived in Atlanta at 4:30 GMT- 6h.                  Everybody was very tired because we couldn’t sleep during the flight.                    We had to walk very long through this giant airport to get from the arrival gate to passport control and our luggage, because the airport is the biggest in America.

Later we took the  bus of the Walker School to get from the airport to school . When we arrived at school everybody was very excited about what their host families will be like. At 8:00 pm the first families came to pick up their German exchange student. Marc’s exchange student Asher arrived at 8:15 pm and they and some other students went to the football game of the Walker School Team (Wolverines). After the game Asher and Marc went home where Marc went to bed very quickly.

Meanwhile Lennard went to Boynton Beach with his exchange student because the grandma of his exchange student celebrated her birthday this weekend. He arrived there at midnight and went quickly to bed because he was very tired of the long trip.

That was the first day from the point of view of  Marc and Lennard (11th grade)

November 04th, 2017, Saturday – Truck and Tap

On Saturday, November 4th, after a typical American breakfast in our host families we left the house and went to Truck and Tap for lunch. We were able to pick up food from their awesome food truck. It was Oliver’s (my) birthday as well and we celebrated it with some delicious cupcakes and balloons. After we had a nice lunch our group split up and we all did different activities in the afternoon, like visiting a pet store or going shopping in Woodstock.

November 05th, 2017, Sunday – individual day

This day is out of My and Marc’s perspective.

For breakfast I went to Waffle House with my exchange student and ordered a very unhealthy, but amazing meal. In the afternoon I went to the cinema where we watched the new „THOR“ movie and enjoyed our popcorn.

Marc started his day by helping his exchange student who organized a football game for younger kids. Later they decided to go to  Six Flags, an amusement park, and spent time there riding roller coasters.

November 06th, 2017, Monday – Atlanta Hawks vs. Boston Celtics

After the individual weekend in our host families, we arrived at the Walker School at 7:30.  In Mr. Morgan’s class we had breakfast from Chick-fil-a.   The chicken biscuit was different to our food in Germany but it was very delicious. Afterwards some American students gave us a tour through the school. We spent the next class  with Mr. Petersen. In his art class we tried to paint realistic leaves just with watercolors. He showed us a video of an artist known for his work for Disney who explained us step by step how to draw the leaves. Later we had our break where we ate lunch in the school cafeteria. In the cafeteria there were different types of food like a salad and sandwich bar and pizza.  After lunch our exchange students took us to their different classes . We spent the last class with Mrs. Walker and learned about American music history.

In the evening we went as a big American German group to the NBA game of Atlanta Hawks vs. Boston Celtics at 7:30pm. We all had a good overview over the game. The whole game was very exciting because the score of the two teams was almost the same. But at the end the Boston Celtics won. The best player in the game of Atlanta Hawks was Dennis Schroeder and the best player in the Boston Celtics team was Kyrie Irving. The whole day was very exciting because we saw the school for the first time and the game in the evening was a good start to a wonderful exchange.

November 07th, 2017, Tuesday – A day at Walker School

On the second day we saw more of the Walker School, as you can see in the pictures. In school we went to a social studies class with Mr. Killian. We talked about politics in America and politics in Germany. Then everybody went to class with his or her exchange student. Afterwards the whole high school met in the theater where we were introduced by our exchange students. After the introduction the whole school got a preview of the musical Bye Bye Birdie, a production of the Walker School. Later on we finished drawing our leaves in the art class. And for the rest of the day we spent time in the Cobb Center Mall and went shopping.

November 09th, 2017, Thursday – Kennesaw State University

EuBo goes KSU

We arrived at the Kennesaw State University at 9:30 AM.

After a short campus tour we went to visit a German class, to see how they were learning and teaching German. We had the chance to talk to American students and ask them questions about how they like the German language and why they have decided to learn German.

After that, we and the Americans went to eat lunch. The dining hall was huge! There was so much food, it was very difficult to decide what we wanted to eat. The food was not too bad actually.

Then it was time to leave the American students and go to class. We went to a German class by Mrs. Ward, who used to teach at Walker School. The day before we had got a worksheet, which we had to fill in and bring to class, just the same like the American students. After they have read out their worksheets, it was our turn.

The day was over so fast and we had to leave too soon.

It was very interesting to see what a typical American university looks like, and we enjoyed the day so much!

Maybe we will come back someday, who knows?

November 10th, 2017, Friday – Germanfest

On Friday, November 10th, we arrived at school at 7:45 a.m.. From 8:00 to 8:55 we had Georgia History and Slang Class with Mr. McCurdy. He talked about how big the states in America are. After the lesson, all German students helped at the Germanfest preparations. We put all the flags from German speaking countries on the wall of the gym. The Germanfest was for all Walker students who wanted to see German traditions. They could taste some German food like pretzels, potatoes and Sauerbraten and German drinks like Spezi (Fanta and Coke ) and Apfelschorle (apple juice and sparkling water). We also prepared a large selection of desserts. For the younger Walker students we prepared two German games to show them what we used to play in our childhood. At the Germanfest we played some different kinds of German music, also some Carnival music. The Germanfest was finished at 2 p.m. We think the Germanfest was a lot of fun, because we enjoyed to show American students some of the German traditions.

November 11th, 2017, Saturday – Sixflags

Sixflags

On Saturday, November 11th we visited the theme park Six Flags with our host family. In the morning we had breakfast with the whole family because the grandparents were there for the weekend. At 2 pm we drove to Six Flags. When we saw the  roller coasters we were a bit nervous because they looked so dangerous. When we got on the first roller coaster, we were shocked because  you could not sit inside the roller coaster, you had to stand! It was very exciting. Often the lines for the roller coasters were very long but we had so much fun and that’s why we didn’t realize how long we had to stand in line . The most special roller coaster was called superman, because you lay inside the roller coaster like superman. I felt like  I was flying. Later we went to ihop. We all ate breakfast for dinner like pancakes, eggs and bacon. That was yummy.

November 12th, 2017, Sunday – student gathering party

We spent the day in our families. But in the evening we had a party, it started at Asher Lauder’s house at 5pm . After everybody arrived there, we ate pizza and talked a lot.  We felt very welcome. Later Yannick and Klaus decided to jump into the pool. It was very cold. We left at 7pm.
